Last week, Delhi faced temperatures higher than its season’s average, with heat waves soaring in the city. However, yesterday there was some respite from the harsh weather after a dust storm hit the capital, which was followed by a sudden downpour. Similar conditions continue for a second day, giving it the much-needed relief from the weather.
Within an hour, the temperature, as per the Indian Meteorological Department, dropped by 10 degrees at various places. Following the events on Thursday, the IMD also issued a yellow alert for an expected increase in similar conditions on Friday. Before the situation became favourable, Safdurjung, which represents the national capital, showed a temperature of 39.6 degrees Celsius. At Ayanagar, the temperature was 40.9, and the ridge recorded 40.2, which was 4.5 degrees Celsius higher than the average temperature for the season.
From 5:30 on Friday evening, the weather began to change. The temperature at Lodhi Road dropped from 36 to 30 within an hour, while at Mayur Vihar it plunged from 37 to 27, as East Delhi recorded more rain as per the IMD. Other than the increase in temperature, higher than usual, the capital recorded warmer nights in the early hours of Thursday, when the heat became unbearable.
The IMD officials recorded “very warm nights” at Palam station, this condition occurs when the maximum temperature is more than 40 degrees Celsius while the lowest temperature is 4.5 to 6.4 degrees above the normal. Five stations, including Safdurjung, recorded “warm nights”.
As per the latest weather forecast on Friday, Delhi can receive light to very light thunderstorms, light showers, and surface winds ranging up to 40 kmph. The temperature for the next two to three days is expected to fall by 3 to 5 degrees, after which there can be a rise of 2 to 4 degrees in the coming days. Temperature at night is also expected to be lower, from 23 to 25 to 19-21, on the coming weekends. While there can be scattered drizzles on the coming weekends, the days after that will mostly witness clear skies and a slight temperature rise.
