Travelling has become more vivid and varied than it used to be. From the main tourist cities, the spotlight has shifted to smaller, unique and lesser-known regions. In India, too. As the internet brings the world onto the same page, tourists from across the world are witnessing different places in India, other than the popular ones like Jaipur, Goa, and Mumbai.
According to Agoda’s Annual New Horizons Ranking, Thiruvananthapuram, nestled in the deep southern state of Kerala, is the fastest-growing destination attracting foreign tourists. Thiruvananthapuram, which ranked 33rd on the list in 2024, has jumped to 22nd in 2025, making it the fastest to grow on the list of international travellers.
The list compares the booking data from the past two years across Asia to rank the destinations accordingly. Kerala, with its beautiful beaches, serene backwaters, and hilltops, is already among one of the most sought-after locations, but for Thiruvananthapuram, which has never been in the spotlight, it’s a big deal to rank on the list.
Its association with wellness and AyurVeda has made it even more attractive as a wellness destination. Thruvananthapuram in Malayalam means ‘The city of Anantha’ after the cosmic seroeant Lord Anantha, who coils around Lord Vishnu. It offers a mix of culture, history, lore, and nature, attracting tourists across the globe.
The Padmanabhaswamy Temple, with Lord Vishnu being its presiding deity, is a major attraction of the city. More than a landmark, the temple is the city’s identity and pride, as it is ranked among the richest temples in India. The temple is built in Dravidian architecture, and its spiritual and religious significance make it the centre of worship in the region.
The city’s blend of calm and culture, its beautiful beaches, especially the Kovalam beach with a lighthouse and golden sand, make it unique yet comforting. It also presents the artistic beauty of the region preserved in the Napier Museum and Shri Chitra Art Gallery nearby.
