A new shuttle service between Andheri and Ghatkopar has been introduced by Mumbai Metro 1 Pvt Ltd (MMOPL) to facilitate commuters’ journeys. The goal of the service is to ease traffic and improve daily commutes, particularly during rush hours.
Trials for the new service were successfully conducted on March 6. Some trains only traveled between Andheri and Versova during the tests, while others traveled all the way to Ghatkopar. MMOPL officials claim that the trial assisted in determining how to enhance service and raise train frequency. The outcomes were favorable, and additional enhancements are being contemplated.
Why the Shuttle Service?
The action is a reaction to heavy commuter traffic. Approximately 52,500 of the 60,000 passengers who use Metro 1 during rush hour go between Andheri and Ghatkopar. It is anticipated that the new shuttle service will carry an extra 5,000 passengers, reducing traffic on the route.
Better Frequency and Faster Travel
The shuttle service will also reduce train wait times. The frequency of trains between Andheri and Ghatkopar will improve, cutting the wait time from 220 seconds to 205 seconds. This will result in over an 8% increase in passenger capacity.
Many commuters have welcomed the change. “Finding space in the train during peak hours is difficult. If the new service helps reduce waiting times, it will be a big relief,” said Ajay Shah, a regular commuter from Ghatkopar.
Currently, Mumbai Metro 1 runs about 430 trips on weekdays. Services operate from 5:30 am to 11:25 pm from Versova and until 11:50 pm from Ghatkopar. Since its launch in June 2014, the Metro has provided a key alternative to the heavily congested Andheri-Kurla Road, which is home to many corporate offices and hotels.
