Winter in North India has arrived earlier than expected. Higher regions in the Himalayas are experiencing early snowfall, leading to an unexpected closure of roads and highways. In Himachal Pradesh, the popular Rohtang pass has been closed for traffic after heavy snowfall that continued for two days.
It snowed heavily in the areas around Marhi, Rohtang, and Atal Tunnel, prompting authorities to stop vehicles beyond Solang Nala and Gulaba. Authorities have permitted only four-wheelers to cross the Atal Tunnel due to the slippery road conditions. Rohtang Pass usually remains open until mid-November when heavy snowfall starts, but this time, due to the arrival of La Niña, snowfall has begun early and the pass has been closed until next year.
This year, the snowfall has arrived before time, disrupting the normal life and tourist activities in the region. While on one hand, the early snowfall has increased the beauty of the hill district, which is ready to draw more tourists in the coming weeks, on the other hand, it has caused problems for the locals. The state has not even recovered completely from the aftereffects of the havoc caused by monsoon fury and is now getting ready for the early winters.
A resident stated that though the snowfall will bring tourists, it will create problems for locals who are not yet ready for the snowfall. The authorities have also stopped the tourists from visiting the higher altitude regions, including Sissu, Koksar, and Rohtang. Areas where the snowfall is light, including Atal Tunnel, Gulaba and Kothi, are attracting visitors already.
Rohtang Pass, which has already closed for visitors, is expected to remain shut until summer next year. Tourists are advised to find safer alternatives near the Solang Valley and Gulaba for an alternative snow experience.
