India is often known by the phrase “unity in diversity” for its religious and cultural amalgamation of different sects and religious ideas. It encompasses sites of many cultures practised in the world. This makes it a hub for cultural tourism, and here are a few most cherished and celebrated sites of the country.
Varanasi
Think spirituality, and Varanasi is the first city that comes to mind. Often called the centre of the universe, the city resting on the trident of Lord Shiva, Varanasi is the centre of Hinduism and Shaiva Bhakti. The energy of the city is pure and powerful, with the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, situated here. The ghats of Varanasi are popular not just in the country but also abroad, along with the centuries-old art and craft that celebrate the authenticity of the artists.

Amritsar
At the heart of Sikhism is the most revered city of Amritsar, which features the Golden Temple. Apart from the Golden Temple, there are several other gurudwaras and museums in Amritsar celebrating the rich heritage of Sikhism in India. The culinary heritage is another feature that makes Amritsar popular on the world map.

Mysore
The cultural capital of Karnataka, Mysore, has been ruled by great Kings who have left their mark on the heritage and intangible culture of the city. It abounds in palaces and museums that speak of the rich culture left by the Kings of the Vijaynagar Empire. Amba Vilas Palace and the Chamundi hilltop temple are some of the most beautiful and culturally rich buildings of the city.

Goa
Goa is synonymous with beaches and beach parties, but beyond this lies the cultural significance of the city that has been influenced by Christianity. The Churches of Goa are recognised as UNESCO World Heritage sites. The intricate architecture and calmness of the churches are symbolic of the diverse nature of India’s culture.

Kolkata
Located on the banks of the river Hoogly, which in itself has great cultural significance, Kolkata has it all. From religiously rich culture to Mughal architecture and Victorian era monuments, there is a tinge of antiquity merged with modernity in the streets of Kolkata. Durga Pooja in Kolkata has been recognised by UNESCO under intangible heritage, and the culinary culture of sweets of Kolkata has made its name throughout the world. Every corner of the country is teeming with culture and heritage, but the few cities that stand out are something that cannot be missed.
