Maharashtra to Draft AI Policy Aimed at Innovation, Jobs, and Growth

Maharashtra is gearing up to create its own Artificial Intelligence (AI) policy to establish the state as a leader in technology and a key player in the AI sector. The announcement was made on Tuesday by Information and Technology Minister Ashish Shelar during a meeting with senior IT officials at the Sahyadri Guest House.

Shelar emphasizes AI’s role in transformation. Economic growth, job creation and business attractiveness “The era of AI has begun. And Maharashtra needs to lead the way. By adopting AI, we can drive economic growth. Create opportunities for youth and secure our position on the global AI map,” he said.

This initiative aligns with the central government’s India AI Mission, launched earlier this year with a budget of ₹10,372 crore. The mission includes building an India AI Datasets Platform, supporting startups, and fostering AI innovation through dedicated programs.

Starting January 2025, the central government will collect and compile non-personal datasets to create a resource database for startups, researchers, and companies. Maharashtra aims to integrate its efforts with this national initiative to stay ahead in the race for excellence in AI.

The draft policy will focus on the application of AI in key industries such as health, agriculture, education and transformation industries. Furthermore, it seeks to cultivate a nurturing ecosystem for startups and to provide valuable skill development opportunities for the youth.

“Maharashtra must take proactive steps to align with the India AI Mission in order to lead the way in innovation and job creation,” emphasized Shelar.

The AI policy is expected to help Maharashtra attract businesses, enhance technological capabilities, and create new employment opportunities. Officials express their confidence that this initiative will align with the central government’s vision of establishing India as a global leader in AI technology.
