Leonal Messi ended his four-city tour of India with a cameo in New Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium on Monday, where the crowd shouted his name amidst the falling colourful confetti. After the blunder in Kolkata, where fans ripped seats and destroyed the venue as local politicians hijacked it, the GOAT tour wrapped up.
The chief organiser of the Kolkata event has also been detained by the police. The events in Mumbai and Hyderabad happened without chaos, where Messi was accompanied by his teammates Rodrigo De Paul and Luis Suarez. Due to fog, his flight to Mumbai was delayed, due to which several events were trimmed. Though the Kolkata meet was vandalised, as fans complained they did not get to see the footballer, the events in other cities passed smoothly, where he also met several people, including Sachin Tendulkar, Shah Rukh Khan, and the Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi.
In the Stadium, Messi also interacted with children and fans, who were gathered to see him. Earlier, he was also expected to meet the Prime Minister of India in Delhi, but Mr Modi left the country on Monday on an official visit to Oman, Jordan, and Ethiopia. As Messi wrapped up his tour in the Arun Jaitley Stadium, he promised his fans he would come back.
Signatories present at the New Delhi event included the Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Jay Shah, the ICC chairman, and Bhaichung Bhutia, the former football captain, among others. Addressing the crowd, he said that it was a great pleasure to be in India and share the experience with everyone.
Speaking in Spanish, he said that he never knew so much love existed, but it was great to witness it in front of his eyes, directly from the people. The tour was marred by a lot of chaos in Kolkata but ended on a good note in Delhi, amidst all the love and support for the generational football star.
