The earthquake had an epicentre in Mandalay, Myanmar and measured 7.7 on the Richter scale causing havoc in the region. The quake destroyed many infrastructures including buildings, bridges, and a dam. Among the total casualties reported till now, around 1000 people died in Myanmar and Bangkok. With several missing.
It is also reported considering the civil war ongoing in Myanmar the casualties are strictly monitored and are expected to rise in the coming hours. As per the German GFZ Center for Geosciences, the quake had a shallow epicentre of only 10 kilometres beneath the surface, that’s why the tremors travelled so wide and were felt in two countries other than the originating country. A few regions of China also felt light tremors.
UN’s secretary general Antonio Guterres has responded saying that help has been sent to the affected regions, amidst videos and photos of the tremors circulating on the internet. Relief assistance is being sent from countries, India has already sent 15 tonnes of relief material to the disaster-hit region.

— Finn Elliot (@finn_elliot01) March 28, 2025 The damage caused by the earthquake was immense bringing down several buildings including the Ma Soe Yane Monastery in Mandalay. A 33-story under-construction building in Thailand was amongst the collapsed infrastructure. Fraser Mortan, a tourist in Bangkok stuck in a mall during the tragedy described his horror, “All of a sudden, the whole building began to move. Immediately, there was screaming and a lot of panic,”
While the earthquake had the worst consequences in Thailand reports from the country are less due to the civil war and further information might disclose the developments and conditions in the country.
