On Monday, 18th August, after the Russian President completed his meeting with Trump in Alaska, he discussed the important points discussed in the meeting with Prime Minister Modi via a telephone call. The meeting in Alaska focused on a peace deal to end the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Although no direct conclusions were drawn after the Alaska meeting, and both leaders came out of it without a ceasefire, a positive outcome is expected in the next few days after an anticipated trilateral meeting between Russia, Ukraine, and the US is completed.
After the call, made three days following the Alaska summit, the Prime Minister of India has informed via X that India has supported a peaceful resolution of the Russia-Ukraine conflict since the beginning of it. He also thanked Putin for calling him and sharing the insights of the meeting, and urged him to support the decision of Russia to end the war peacefully. India’s growing affinity with Russia comes at a time when the US President has threatened India with a 50% tariff for its continued ties with Russia and importing oil from the country.
The PMO has reported that the leaders have also discussed bilateral operations during the call and aim to strengthen the Special and privileged Strategic Partnership between the two countries. The Kremlin has also informed that Vladimir Putin had called the Prime Minister of India to discuss the key outcomes of the meeting in Alaska. It also focused on the peaceful resolution of the conflict with a long-term solution. The President of Russia, during the call, has also expressed his condolences on the flood situation in the Himalayan states.
The Russian leader has also called other strategic partners after the meeting, including the leaders of South Africa, Tajikistan, Brazil, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Belarus, to inform them about the outcomes of the meeting with the President of the US. Putin is keeping his strategic partners in the loop regarding all the updates in the matter, as this was the second call in the last 10 days with India. Last time, both the leaders interacted on 8th August about the developments in the war, and also talked about deepening the India-Russia strategic partnership.
The Indian and Russian leaders are also expected to meet in Tianjin on the sidelines of the SCO summit scheduled for 31st August and 1st September.
