The Homeland Security of the United States of America recently reported that the government is willing to give $ 1000 to migrants to deport them and also provide travel expenses if they decide to go to their home country of their own will. The department also reported that this is the best and safest way to leave the country without facing arrest.
Secretary Kristi Noem said, “DHS is now offering illegal aliens financial travel assistance and a stipend to return to their home country through the CBP Home App.”
During his election campaign, the current President Donald Trump emphasised the issue of illegal migrants and deporting them. The cost of deportation is said to be high for the country. The DHS reported that the total cost of deporting an illegal immigrant is $17,121. The agency further said that the incentive of giving travel assistance has been helpful, as an illegal immigrant has recently left the country by a flight from Chicago to Honduras. For the upcoming weeks, many more tickets have been booked.
The agency has also claimed that the government under Trump has already deported 1,52,000 people since January 20. The agency has also asserted that the programme allows people to re-enter the United States later through legal means. Trump also emphasised a similar statement in the Oval Office on Monday, where he said that the administration will work with the people, and if they are good, it might consider taking them back.
Critics, however, have an opposite view on the policy. Aaron Reiclin-Melnick, a senior fellow at the American Immigration Council, said that this is cruel of the DHS to tell the people to leave now and have a chance to come back later. In the post shared on Social media, Aaron further said that this might put the people in a worse situation legally.
The idea of “self-deportation: is based on the concept that the administration will make it so unbearable for illegal immigrants to stay in America that they will be forced to leave, this in a way is an inumane action, but many in the states are in support of the president’s view due to lack of opportunities which they claim are reducing due to migrants.
