The government of India has spoken about the $100,000 fee for H-1B visa applicants and stated that it will have “humanitarian consequences”. Donald Trump, the President of the US, has declared that the new fees, 60 times the current ones, will be applicable from 21st September. The H-1B visa benefits Indians more than any other diaspora, as over 70% beneficiaries in the scheme are Indians. As soon as the news spread, the US companies issued a notice asking the visa holders to stay in the country or return as soon as possible.
White House has, however, clarified that the fee does not apply to current visa holders and those who have to renew their applications. The statement released by the Ministry of External Affairs stated that the announcement will disrupt families and will have moral consequences. The statement also stated that the government of India was hoping for a proper and timely redressal from the US government.
It further said that skilled workers from both sides have led to the growth of the economy. Depending upon the mutual benefits, authorities will decide the future course of action for both countries. The US has previously imposed a 50% tariff on India, causing a tense environment between the two countries. Things were getting better in the last few days, but this new announcement will undoubtedly have some consequences on the “special bond” between India and the US.
According to Reuters, the Indian commerce minister, Piyush Goyal, will visit the United States on Monday for trade talks. As per industry leaders like Nasscom, the sudden change in the H-1 B visa programme has created a panic situation among students, professionals, and businesses across the globe.
Talking about the reason for the sudden surge in fees, the White House responded that the visas were being “abused” and exploited, and were also taking away jobs from American citizens. The order of the White House also stated that a case-by-case exemption will be provided, keeping in mind the national interest.
