Toll under the earthquake in South Asia with an epicentre in Mandalay crossed 1600, and with the BIMSTEC summit next week in Bangkok, which is affected by the quake rescue operations are sent by various nations.
India had previously sent relief material to the affected region followed by a special medical task force under “Operation Brahma” named after the Hindu god of creation. The team consists of 118 members from Shatrujeet Brigade Medical Responders led by Captain Jagneet Gill.
The force is equipped to give medical help and will be operating a 60-bed treatment facility in the calamity-affected region as per the reports of the Ministry of Defence. This move conforms with India’s ideology of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakan” meaning “the world is one family” and India’s “Neighbourhood first” policy.
The operation is coordinated by External Affairs Ministry and the authorities in Myanmar, and other than the special task force over 137 tonnes of supply has been sent by ships to Myanmar. External Affairs minister, S. Jaishankar shared via X that INS Savitri and INS Satpura will reach Yangon port in Myanmar with adequate supplies of relief material, “#OperationBrahma Indian Navy ships INS Satpura & INS Savitri are carrying 40 tonnes of humanitarian aid and headed for the port of Yangon.”
Other countries including the US, China, Singapore, and Russia have also sent help to the affected region, while the MEA said that 15,000 Indian families are living in Myanmar which means 50,000 to 60,000 Indians, however, no Indian casualties have been reported till now.
