After 1.5 years of violence and ethnic struggle in Manipur, the Prime Minister visited the state and addressed the groups from its capital, Imphal, on Saturday. He asked the communities, including the Meitis and the hill tribes, to “build a strong bridge of harmony” while moving on a path of harmony and peace.
The Prime Minister made the speech from Kangla Fort, where he also launched several developmental projects for the people of the state. He further motivated the people to maintain peace and not indulge in violence, as it is neither good for the historic figures of the state nor for future generations. Emphasising the importance of dialogue, he addressed the need for talks to make Manipur a development hub. The Prime Minister also addressed people in the Kuki-dominated Churachandpur.
The Prime Minister’s address is important in the backdrop of continued violence in the state, which has led to several killings and destruction in the past two years. The speech is a significant indication of the power of reconciliation and that the central government supports dialogue between the two communities. Launching two new initiatives in the state, a 3,600 crore mega Manipur urban road project and a 500 crore project to develop infotech in the state, he said that the path of development will be the bridge between the two communities.
He further emphasises that since independence, the Southern and Western states have received more attention, but the new century belongs to the Eastern states, which is why the government is pushing development in the states. He also pointed out the increasing growth rate of Manipur. Highlighting the role of women in Manipur’s economy, he also mentioned the Ima Keithel markets run by the women. The rich tradition of Ima Keithel is a unique feature of Manipur, and the Prime Minister announced the opening of four new markets on Saturday.
He also talked about the latest GST reforms and how they would boost consumption and growth in the state. Talking about the rich cultural and sports heritage, he emphasised Manipur’s potential during his speech.
