Protests by the Unnao rape case survivor and any others continued till Friday, after the Delhi High Court granted bail to the BJP MLA Kuldip Singh Sengar in the 2017 Unnao rape case. Several women sat before the High Court building, with placards to support the victim.
On Tuesday, the Delhi high court ordered Sengar’s release, who was in jail for a lifetime. Women protested for the justice of the Unnao rape survivor, with placards that read “Unnao sister, I am sorry”. The protests were carried out peacefully before the complex, while the Delhi police used loudspeakers to ask protestors to leave the premises. Police officers were heard saying that legal action against the protestors will be taken if they do not leave the premises.
Advocate Mehmood Pracha, representing the Unnao survivor, stated that they have heard about CBI’s appeal against the High Court order, but have not received any further information on it. He added that it has been reported that the CBI will appeal against the case, but whether it will fight in the Supreme Court diligently is not clear.
Pracha also revealed that, regardless of the CBI, an appeal will be filed in the Supreme Court against the order, and a fresh FIR against officials helping Sengar will also be lodged with the CBI. He added that the central agency against crime should investigate the matter, as a similar thing happened with the Hathras victim. He asked for transparent investigations, else no woman can be safe in the country, while appealing to the protestors to demand justice.
On Thursday, 25 December, two advocates filed separate appeals challenging the suspension of the prison sentence of the BJP MLA.
