A huge debate has erupted after America’s Vice President, JD Vance, hugged right-wing activist Charlie Kirk’s widow, Erika Kirk, when the entire world was watching. The two were attending an event at the University of Mississippi on Wednesday night, for the “This is the Turning Point” tour, which was co-founded by Late Charlie Kirk and his wife.
Vance was one of the most important guests at the event and also took Charlie’s role of addressing the students. The audience, however, is not concerned about the tour or its result, but the hug that took place between Erika and Vance. Where the USA’s vice president was seen holding her waist as Erika had some emotions on her face.
The moment caught the light as soon as it occurred, as many present at the event suggested that the incident was not received very well by Vance’s wife, the second lady, Usha. This did not end here, as Vance also made a statement saying that he had hoped his wife, who is a Hindu, would convert to Christianity and understand the world like he does.
Usha and Vance have three kids, all of whom are being raised as Christians, while two of them are already attending Christian schools. Vance remarked that he is a true believer in the Christian Gospel and wishes for his wife to see it the way he does. Clarifying his statement, he added that if his wife does not see it the way he wishes, she is free to have her views, as everybody is free. But it seems like the clarification did nothing but add fuel to the fire.
The audience has already begun speculating about something between Vance and Kirk. While others say that if it were not the case, the event on Wednesday was disrespectful for the Vice-President’s wife, as her parents have already done enough for him.
The event on Wednesday also marked Erika Kirk’s first major public appearance after her husband’s assassination seven weeks ago. Addressing the students, she also talked about her grief. Another shocking part of the speech was Erika’s comparison of her husband with the vice president. She spoke about how she missed Kirk, and no one can replace him. Adding that she sees similarities between Kirk and Vance.
The crowd cheered at Erika’s words, but as soon as the moment went viral, the internet was divided, with a few sympathising with her and others calling out for blurring the lines between emotions and political symbolism.
