Bihar’s popular folk singer, Maithili Thakur, is among the list of 12 candidates who will contest elections from Bihar. Thakur has been given the ticket from Alinagar. Out of the 12 seats BJP gave tickets to nine new candidates.
Maithili’s nomination is a strategic move by the BJP, as her popularity in the Mithilanchal region and especially among younger generations will increase the BJP’s chances in Alinagar. Talking about her nomination on Tuesday, Thakus expressed her gratitude towards the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister of Bihar. She also stated that she would like to contribute to the region and promote its culture through her victory.
Other important nominations include those of IPS officer Anand Mishra from Buxar, Chhoti Kumari from Chapra, and Virendra Kumar from Rosra. The two MLAs who will contest again are Hayaghat’s Ramchandra Prasad and Rosera’s Birendra Kumar. Some candidates have been left out of the list. The names include those of Gyanendra Singh Gyanu, CN Gupta, and Kusum Devi.
Alinagar, which has emerged as a major battleground in the elections, also saw a VIP contestant last year. From Baniapur, Kedar Nath Singh will contest. Baniapur also saw contestation from a VIP candidate last year.
Other than Thakur, Kumari, and Mishra, other new candidates include Shubhash Singh, Ranjan Kumar, Kedarnath Singh, Mahesh Paswan, Siyaram Singh, and Rakesh Ojha. The BJP has included more new faces in the second list, which is seen as a countermeasure against the Jan Suraaj Party of Prashant Kishore. The JSP aimed to field candidates from different spheres, including retired citizens as election candidates.
