The prime minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese, won a second three-year term in the 2025 general elections in the Southern country. This is a historic victory as no one in the past 21 years has won a consecutive term. Anthony’s centre-left party has won a majority in the House of Representatives.
The opposition party, led by Peter Dutton, was defeated with 24 seats. Acknowledging defeat, Dutton said that the party had not done enough in their campaign, and the defeat signifies it. He also took responsibility for the loss and congratulated Albanese and his party on the historic victory. PM Modi also congratulated the prime minister, he took to X, and said that the emphatic mandate and the faith of Australian citizens in the Prime Minister were the major reasons behind his victory. He also asserted on the relations between the two nations, saying that this is a great opportunity for the countries to separate from each other, and establish a peaceful and stable Indo-Pacific.
The Labour government got 150 seats in the lower house, but depending on the final allocation, they can form either a majority or minority government. Analysts say that the Labour Party is expected to win 76 seats, and the other parties, including the coalition, will get 36 seats, and the unaligned party will get 13. Albanese’s campaign focused on energy and inflation. The election process was spread across six weeks and has garnered world attention due to the influence of President Trump.
The election was also historic as it saw a large number of young electors for the first time. As a result, the policies of the campaigners also focused on first-time buyers of houses and addressed the cost of living in the country. The winning liberal party also focused on improved relations with China, as the Australian exporters have suffered due to poor Chinese relations.
The elections are a reflection of people’s support for the party and are also important for the bilateral relations between India and Australia.
