After the government of K.P. Sharma Oli fell from power due to massive protests in Nepal, no consensus seems to have been built amongst the protestors. The GenZ protest, as it is labelled, took down the government in power along with official infrastructures, including the parliament building.
The protestors gathered in front of the Nepal Army headquarters to negotiate with Ashok Sigdel, the Army chief general of Nepal, who has been authorised to talk to them on behalf of the officials. The voting conducted on a Discord server resulted in Shushila Karki as the most favoured leader. Karki is Nepal’s first woman to become the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and is an academician. She asked the authorities to figure out a way, and also declared that the parliament is still alive.
The other major leader proposed by the protesting group is Kul Man Ghising. Ghising served as Nepal Electricity Authority’s Managing Director and is known to have solved Nepal’s power shortage issue. He was removed from the position earlier this year by the Oli government, and his removal was not welcomed by the masses. Balendra Shah, who is the Mayor of Kathmandu, was earlier expected to be the major contender for the position, but he recently declared about stepping down and now favours the election of Justice Karki.
The demonstrations that started on Monday have led to complete chaos in the Himalayan country and killed over 35 people. The youth of Nepal protested against heightened corruption and unemployment problems amidst the luxurious lifestyle of Nepal’s elite. Though restrictions are being lifted as of Thursday, the situation is still fragile, and police checkpoints have been installed across the capital. The Indian government has also issued a notice asking its citizens to avoid travelling to the neighbouring country.
