The project is being executed by the Delhi Development Authority under the long-awaited plan to redevelop the 22 km long Yamuna River stretch between Wazirabad and Okhla Barrage where the earlier Millennium Park bus depot existed.
Among the major attractions will be a topiary park, central piazza, and shopping centre similar to that of the Sunder Nursery, along with 25-hectare-long pavement for walking. Here is the draft of the structure of the new plan spread along 1600 hectares.
Among the unique features of the riverfront is the use of concrete, unlike the Ahmedabad riverfront in Gujrat. A senior official from the government said, “Any concrete that exists at the site or remnants of the bus depot are being cleared. Only ecologically suitable materials will be used. We have seen success with these materials in the other sections of the floodplain.”
This will ensure that the riverfront is sustainable and does not create an ecological footprint. Officials further stated that the plan for building a new riverfront replacing the Millenium Park bus depot has been under consideration for a long, but it is now that the blueprint has been given to the government work for the same will begin soon.
The Yamuna floodplains and the area surrounding it are under zone O where any permanent construction is lawfully prohibited, but many instances of exploitation have occurred in past including flyovers and the Commonwealth Games project.
This project however has been designed to ensure its ecological sustainability under the DDA, which will execute the project.
