The joy of Diwali is never complete without sharing and caring. One of the most awaited festivals of the year, Diwali, falls on 20th October this year. As the country gears up for the festivities, the spirit of promoting local businesses and indigenous workers has gained momentum.
Recent years have seen a major shift towards promoting indigenous commodities on Diwali. The use of earthen diyas over plastic and readymade ones is one major change visible even in metro cities. This has led to the growth of local markets in Delhi, Jaipur and Mumbai. Biodegradable decorations, solar-powered lamps, and handmade clay murtis of Lord Ganesha and Goddess Laxmi are a reflection of the growing spirit of “Vocal for Local”.
This shift also shows the growing environmental consciousness of India, where people are encouraging earthen diyas over firecrackers. Temples, including the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya have taken the step towards curbing pollution by announcing completely eco-friendly practices in Diwali decorations and celebrations this year.
Diwali today is a perfect example of modernity mixed with tradition. With the advent of the Indian diaspora across the world, it has become a symbol of India across countries. Landmarks in London, New York, Sydney, and Singapore have been illuminated with Diwali lights.
The government has also taken active steps towards promoting indigenous and sustainable Diwali celebrations in the form of cleanliness drives under the Swachh Bharat campaign. The Environment Ministry, under its initiative of “Eco-friendly Deepawali Melas”, have promoted organic sweets, handmade goods, and clay lamps.
Diwali celebrations give a boost to the country’s overall economy by boosting several sectors like textiles, furniture, electronics, and jewellery. However, the highlight this year remained on eco-friendly products and Made in India products. As the prime minister promoted local shops and businesses, many celebrities have joined in to promote the communities in the country.
Bollywood actors Tripto Dimri and Madhuri Dixit shared stories promoting local shops in India. Television actress Rupali Ganguly also shared her experience of buying clothes from a local shop.
Diwali is all about sharing love and light. Buying from local artisans boosts their income and gives them the recognition they deserve, bringing happiness and prosperity across realms of life.
