On Friday at around 10 am, strong tremors were felt in Kolkata and other areas of West Bengal. The epicentre of the earthquake was, however, in Bangladesh, but residents of West Bengal felt tremors for a few seconds.
As per the National Centre of Seismology, the magnitude of the quake was 5.7, and it was recorded at a depth of 10 km in Bangladesh. The quake jolted the capital early morning, and people were seen coming out of their houses into the streets. An office goer shared that he was jolted while still in his office chair. He said that he thought it was dizziness, but later found that other objects were shaking.
The epicentre of the earthquake was around 13 kilometres south of Narsingdi in Bangladesh. The tremors also reach the capital of Bangladesh, Dhaka. No major loss or casualty has been reported, but tremors were felt even in other areas of North East, including Tripura’s Dharmanagar, Tura and Cherapunjee in Meghalaya and Aizwal in Mizoram.
Earlier, an earthquake of 5.2 was recorded in Pakistan, and as per the National Centre of Seismology, the epicentre of the quake was located at a distance of 135 kilometres.
The jolts have not only jolted the cities but also led to some crazy remarks by political parties. The Bhartiya Janta Party wrote on their X handle that “West Bengal just felt earthquake tremors,” and mentioned the Chief Minister of Bengal, the party joked if it was due to SIR.
The All Indian Trinamool Congress did not wait and responded that it was the ground under the BJP that was shaking as they would lose the assembly elections in 2026.
