After a successful first season on Netflix, the comedy series ‘Single Papa’ featuring Kunal Khemu has been renewed for the second season, Netflix announced on 5th January. The first season of the show was released on 12th December last year.
The series is created by Neeraj Udhwani and Ishita Moitra, and directed by Shashank Khaitan, Mitesh Kewalya, and Neeraj. The series revolves around Gaurva Gehlot, played by Kunal. Gaurav, a man-child, decided to become a father against the wishes of his working wife, Aparna, played by Isha Talwar.
The premise of the series is around the family’s reaction to Gaurav’s decision, and the entry of a little toddler, whom he called Amul, into his life. The protagonist starts caring for the baby as his own, and wants to adopt him, but trouble starts as Romila Nehru (played by Neha Dhupia) from the Central Authority of Child Adoption deems him unfit to become a father.
Even at home, his family, including his father Jatin played by Manoj Peshwa, his mother played by Ayesha Raza, and his sister Namrata (Prajakta Kohli), try to talk him out of his decision due to different reasons. This doesn’t stop Gaurav, as he continues to love Amul and keep him with himself.
The series explores the theme of how and whether a man is capable of raising a baby alone. Though the writing mismatched in the beginning, it finally finds its roots as the drama unfolds, keeping the audience hooked for the six episodes of the series.
The series has a fun, feel-good vibe about it, though it is. criticised for being plastic in some frames. The affectionate bond between Gaurav and the toddler forms the major premise of the series, and Kunal has hit the right chords in depicting the emotions on screen. The display of alternate masculinity offered by the show is refreshing and appreciated.
The first season is currently streaming on Netflix, while the dates for the second season have not been unveiled.
