A shocking incident has been reported from Tamil Nadu, where three men have been accused of raping a colleague. The accused have been arrested after they tried attacking the police personnel while fleeing.
The incident occurred in Coimbatore. The three men have been recognised as Karuppasamy, Thavasi, and Kaaleeswaran near a temple. Officials reported that the accused tried to attack the officers with sticks, during which Head Constable Chandrashekar was injured.
The attack by the accused led to a police response, where they shot them in the legs, injuring them and taking them into custody. They are currently admitted to the district government hospital in Coimbatore. As per reports, the accused are from Sivagangai and were working in construction work in Coimbatore.
All three men have pending criminal cases against them, and Karuppasamy and Kaaleeswaran are related to each other. Investigations revealed that the incident occurred on Sunday when the college student was out with her friend when they were attacked. The victim’s friend was attacked as they abducted her and fled the location.
The crime was allegedly committed in a secluded area near the airport. Saravana Sundar, the police commissioner of Coimbatore, said that the accused were intoxicated and also stole a bike, and were carrying a sickle with them. They used the sickle to threaten the victim and also broke the glass of the car, at around 10:45 pm. The two suspects, Kaaleeswaran and Karuppaswamy, were on bail while they committed the crime.
The incident has led to a lot of debate and political turmoil in the state, as the opposition is blaming the DMK for undermining women’s safety in the state. L. Murugum states that the gruesome incidence shows that crime against women in Tamil Nadu has not reduced. State’s BJP Chief Nainar Nagendran has called for a protest in the state. While public outrage is also reaching a peak.
