The Lucknow police arrested the parents of a resident doctor from King George Medical University after reports of alleged religious conversion.
Police stated that the arrests were made regarding two cases. In the first one, a resident doctor from Agra’s Medical College was forced to convert, while a resident doctor from KGMU was forced to convert to marry their son. Salimuddin and Khadija, the parents of the resident doctor, Rameezuddin, lived in the old city area of Lucknow, in a rented house.
The doctor, Rameezuddin, is on the run, and police have increased the reward for him from 25,000 to 50,000. The DCP of Lucknow, Vishwajeet Srivastava, confirmed that the arrests against the parents were only made after the two victims stated in front of a magistrate that they were involved in causing forced conversion, which led to a miscarriage.
The DCP revealed that Rameezuddin is charged with sexual exploitation of the victims, and causing a miscarriage other than forcible marriage. During further investigation of the parents, police revealed that a Muslim cleric who performed the Nikah ceremony, and a witness have also come to light, but whether they will be considered as accused in the case is yet to be confirmed based on further evidence.
The police are currently searching for the doctor and have asked different police stations for the same, after obtaining a non-bailable warrant against him. Officials are also looking for ways to attach his properties by presenting the case before the court.
Raids have already been conducted at the doctor’s ancestral home in Pilibhit and his house in Uttarakhand, but nothing has been found until now.
